Not Your Average Craft Fair

You never know where you might stumble across a giant cheeseburger. For SLS Graphic Designer Laura Schaeffer, this happened just a few weeks ago at the craft and art fair Show of Hands in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago. To call Show of Hands simply a “craft show” is a wild understatement; it’s more akin to an Etsy enthusiast’s bazaar dropped in the middle of a haunted house.

While the giant cheeseburger was inedible—though available for purchase—snacks and drinks were sold at the event, so attendees could sip beer as they wandered through the booths of over 60 local independent designers and artists. Vendors offered a wide range of goods including wall art, home décor, clothing and accessories for adults and children, and kitchen and beauty products. Expertly crafted jewelry and paper goods were easy to be found, but less conventional items appeared as well, such as terrariums and on-site henna applications. And while many items incorporated a nod to the Windy City, every piece had an independent or handmade touch.

This market filled the lower level of a building that could be considered an art piece in its own right. The location was originally two separate warehouse spaces that have since been updated, connected with an atrium, and converted into the current showroom. Today, the location’s primary use is to house Architectural Artifacts, a company that recovers, sells, and displays found treasures from all over the world.

The three floors above the show vendors hold these treasures, an eclectic mix of the creepy, the beautiful, and the unwanted. Among the items our designer Laura noticed were card catalogs, auditorium chairs, doll heads, phone booths, enormous neon signs, mannequins, and laboratory equipment. Scattered over three floors, you could easily get lost in this hodgepodge of found items. Luckily, because the atrium provides plenty of natural sunlight, you won’t be lost for long, but you may emerge with a $6,000 gargoyle in tow.

If you’re looking for an out-of-the-ordinary alternative to the many museums Chicago has to offer, the next Show of Hands will take place in November 2015, just in time for the holiday season. This event is free to the public and will be held in the same location. You can learn more about the show here, and you can take a virtual tour of the Architectural Artifacts space here.
