From Polka Dots to Button Downs

As a bunch of seasoned graphic designers and programmers, we are always looking for inspiration for the next great marketing campaign. Given that today is a national holiday, Presidents Day, our eyes are drawn to the lighter side of politics.

A number of years ago, our creative director took a trip to Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota, in search of particular roadside attractions. On the way, a vision appeared on the side of the road that winds through the Black Hills near the famous mountain sculptures. It was a giant bust of Abraham Lincoln. Brakes screeched, the turn signal went on, and lo and behold, there was an entire park devoted to 20-foot sculptures of the head of every U.S. president.

We've all seen photos of these statesmen, but to see them up close and three times taller than the yourself was something special. Actually, maybe creepy. Maybe just plain kitsch. The most shocking part of the experience, besides the men's room identified as "Presidents" and the women's room labeled "First Ladies," was the careful sculpting of the collars and ties. Each one represented a time and style. The photos below show just a few, but hopefully you can take some inspiration from this and can create a new experience for yourself today. From everyone at Street Level Studio, Happy Presidents Day!

Can you guess which tie belongs to which president? Hover over each photo for the answer.
